Brain Slugs!

'What?!?! MORE cupcakes? Where are the drawings and sewings and art, Alicia?' you say.

'Psshaw!' say I. ' I HAD to make them! They're brain slugs. I have no choice.'

And so this past weekend, I made some Futurama brain slug cupcakes for a birthday celebration. We needed something that could travel to the pub, be delicious, be to the birthday boy's liking in terms of content, and fairly quick and easy to make, just like last year's Zappa Utility Muffins.

Goal acheived!

And I have to say they tasted especially delicious with some Real Ale coffee porter. Mmmm!

I opted to make the brain slugs themselves from gum paste, with royal icing eyes, and flower stamen antennae that I attempted to dye green with food coloring (and very vaguely succeeded in doing so). They are vanilla cupcakes from scratch, with some slightly grenadine flavored buttercream icing brains.

And they were as tasty as the sweet, sweet fluids the brain slugs crave themselves! Pin It

I have some nephews who would love to have brains on their cupcakes like that! Is there anything special about your frosting that helps it hold it's shape in looking extra 'brainy'?

@ Laura,

I wouldn't say there's anything 'special' about the icing . A standard recipe for buttercream icing or 'decorator's' buttercream icing should work. I've done similar styles of decorating using both, and they're very much the same. This one used my mom's icing recipe, which uses water in place of milk.

Just make sure it's not too thick -- you won't be able to squeeze it out of the tube!

That actually happened to me with these guys, so I put it back in the bowl, added a tad bit of water (maybe a tblsp?), and whipped it some more to make it fluffier. It came out just right that time around.

Are the sluggies edible? (I'm stupid when it comes to baking stuff.)

@ ME

The slugs are made of gumpaste and royal icing, which are both edible. However, they are not necessarily the tastiest substances on earth.

However, both of them hold up very well over time , are easy to remove from the cake, and are really pretty durable when dry (unlike fondant). Just make sure to keep it dry and to remove any icing, which could make it gummy.

Then, you have yourself a little brain slug keepsake sugar sculpture to sit on your shelf!

Another edible alternative if you wanted to make these yourself would be marzipan. Which I didn't do because the birthday boy doesn't like it.

And the antennae... are not edible. : (

you could perhaps make edible antennae by making a hot thick sugary mix of some sort(maybe add gelatin to make it goopy like snot:D )and then tease it out into drips before hitting them with a blowdrier to 'freeze' them, so the set as elongated drips which you reverse and poke into your cupcake slugs head.

just an idea, phil.
