Gettin' Ink

Just wanted to pop in and show you the li'l illustration I drew up to accompany the fabulous Jenny Hart's 'Crafting a Business' column over at venuszine.com. This month's column is about getting press, or rather 'gettin' ink' (hence the tattoo-age) for your craft business.

I am so pleased and flattered to be working with such great people on such a great column (if you are running or thinking of running your own craft business, you must read it!). I've been a fan of Jenny Hart and Sublime Stitching for a loooong time, and Venus Zine is a new favorite for me. I hope they become favorites for the rest of ya (if they're not already...), so go check it out! Pin It

¡Viva Elvis!

Tomorrow (or today, depending on when you read this) is Elvis' birthday, so I thought I'd post some Elvis art I did just for the occasion. I've mentioned before that I don't want to turn this into a 'work' blog, but I just couldn't resist sharing my birthday cake balancing Priscilla-themed ladies' shirt I did for the Chuy's 'Elvis' Birthday Bash.' I think of it as being very Alician.

Once, when I was in high school, my mom told me that most Alicia pieces of artwork can be boiled down to the theme of 'girls with hair.' It's nice to see that I'm staying true to my roots. And no, that pun wasn't intended, but it's staying nonetheless.

Also, I'd like to add that her hairstyle, is not that far from the real thing. Craziness! I can't imagine walking around like that.

For you locals who may read this, if you feel it in your hips or in your blue suede shoes, head on over to Chuy's tomorrow -- on 183 5:00-6:30pm, and on Barton Springs Rd. from 7:30-9:30pm. Pin It

Happy New Year

Happy New Year, everyone!

I drew this up whilst the boyfriend and I were at a cafe the other evening.  It's ink and gouache. La la la! Babies are cute! Hooray for an even numbered year!

Oh yeah, so about the even numbered year thing -- here's another story about just how weird of a kid I was, and since it's semi-new year related, here you go...

When I was little, I had this thing against odd numbers.  I did not like nor 'trust' odd numbers. Odd numbers were warm colors and varying shades of red, orange and yellow, and they were pointy and kind of itchy and just seemed 'mean.'  At least they were to me.  Even numbers were good.  They were round, and they were cool colors, like blues, purples, and greens, and they were friendly (it appears that I perhaps probably had some form of synesthesia.)

Anyway, I had this notion in my head throughout my childhood that even numbered years were good for me, while odd numbered years brought bad times.  I so did not look forward to beginning odd numbered years, while the start of an even numbered year seemed like a relief.

It all turned out to be all just my own rubbish superstitions and mental oddities, but somehow I am still psyched about the year ending in a nice, round, friendly eight than in a pointy, pokey seven.

Here's hoping this even numbered year is good to everyone -- not just me!
